LONDON, June 4 /PRNewswire/ — - British Fans Head to football Minnows This Summer
As the 16 European nations gear up for a summer of glorious football at Euro 2008, here at home, fans are preparing a summer away from the beautiful game.
Leading online travel and leisure retailer lastminute.com has looked at its latest summer holiday bookings to see where fans are heading this summer and it appears non-competing nations are hitting the top spot.
According to the research, fans - like the home nation teams are heading to the beach rather than watching Europe’s finest compete without them.
lastminute.com has seen a rise in bookings to non-competing nations Bulgaria (up a staggering 151% YOY), Cyprus (up 32% YOY), and Malta (up 10% YOY).
Other popular destinations throughout June include the African destinations of Tunisia (up 24% YOY) and Gambia (up 19% YOY).
Furthermore, in a recent survey conducted by lastminute, 74% of women said that they were happy the home nations were not competing in this year’s championships and are looking forward to a football free summer.
Interestingly, only 24% of men said they would be watching every game with a massive 43% saying they would not tuning in at all.
John Bevan, Managing Director of lastminute.com said, “It would appear that it is too painful for fans to stay home and watch Euro 2008 without their team competing. In recent years during the championships, lastminute.com witnessed a surge of bookings once the final ball had been kicked. This year however, we are seeing very strong bookings throughout June, with fans heading to non-competing nations across Europe and the globe”.
